There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do;
She gave them some broth without any bread;
Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.[1]
The earliest printed version was in Joseph Ritson's Gammer Gurton's Garland in 1794 and had the coarser last line:
“She whipp'd all their bums, and sent them to bed.”[2]
